Ch 47: Lord Rama Avataram: 28.4 MB – 159 Verses – 25 mins 34 sec

Ravana, the son of Visrava, was tormenting the Gods, who went to Vishnu. Brahma offers a superb hymn to Lord Vishnu, who said He will be born as the son of King Dasaratha, who was childless. King Dasaratha performed a Putreshti yagna and the prasaadam was distributed to his wives. King Dasaratha ended up with 4 sons: Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Shatrughna.

Sage Vishwamitra asks King Dasaratha to let him have Rama and Lakshmana as helpers while he did his penance; which the King agreed to reluctantly. The Sage taught them great skills; Rama killed Tadaka, a monstress who tormented the saints in the area.

Rama was then married to Sita.

Rama is sent to exile due to Kaikeyi’s wish. His father Dasaratha falls unconscious and he expires.

Ch 49: Lord Rama’s Life in the Forest: 22.6 MB – 137 Verses – 20 mins 6 sec

Indra’s son, Jayantha the crow slams into Sita’s chest; pleads guilty after Rama had shot an arrow at him, making him lose an eye. Rama meets various sages including Sarabhanga, Sutikshna and Agastya. He also meets Jatayu, the eagle, who promised to guard Sita.

Rama has Lakshmana cut off the nose of the monstres Surpanakha,  who was Ravana’s sister. She seeks the shelter of monsters Khara, Dushana and Trishira and tells them of Rama’s whereabouts in the forest. A battle ensues and the monsters were killed.

Ravana then plans to abduct Sita and engages his uncle Maareechaa, who reluctantly accepts to change form into a golden deer and entice Sita to chase him, whence he would mimic Rama’s voice calling Lakshmana for help; Lakshmana would follow to protect his brother Rama and at that point, Ravana would abduct the lone Sita.

The mission went as planned, but Jatayu, the eagle, who heard Sita’s cries flew down to protect Her, but was killed by Ravana. Sita drops her ornaments tied into a cloth bundle that reached the monkey King Sugriva.

Rama and Lakshmana started searching for Sita in the forest and saw the dying Jatayu, met Kabandha the cursed monster and Sabari, the lady saint.

Ch 50: Search for Sita Continues: 17.6 MB – 167 Verses – 22 mins 49 sec

Lord Rama and Lakshmana get introduced to Sugriva and Hanuman. Rama kills Bali, coronates Angada and restores Sugriva’s wife Tara back to Sugriva. The army of monkeys led by Angada start the search for Sita, come across Sampathi in the Mahendra mountain, who gives the clue that Sita is kept under an Ashoka tree pointing southwards. Hanuman was then given complete charge to locate Sita. (audio a bit scratchy)

A massive battle ensues between Rama’s army on one side with Jambavan, Angada, Sugriva, Hanuman, Lakshmana, etc and Ravana’s army with Dhumraakshaa, Dhumrapaanaa, Kumbhakarnaaa, Atikaaya, Mahakaaya, Devantaka, Narantaka, etc.

Eventually, Rama kills Ravana and takes Sita and returns to Ayodhya and accepts the throne, having been pressured by Bharata.

Ch 63: Story of Indra and Chitrasena: 17.8 MB – 123 Verses – 18 mins 58 sec

Once Indra who thought of giving up pleasures of heaven in favor of emancipation, came down to earth and fell in sensual love with Lord of Wealth Kubera’s wife Chitrasena and decided to forego the search for emancipation. Indra had an affair with her. This enraged Kubera ( referred to in the audio as “Dhanadha” ), who goes to Lanka to share his sad story with his brother Vibhishana , who was the King of Lanka, asking him for help in locating her.

Vibhishana agreed and sent the monstress Naadijanga who turned herself magically into a beautiful lady and went in search of Chitrasena.  Indra perceived her, didn’t know who she was and fell in love with her now. Naadijanga agreed to go with Indra on the condition that He show her all of his wives to see if anyone was more beautiful than her. ( of course this was only a pretext ; she was interested in getting to Chitrasena ).

Indra told her that one more of his wives ( i.e., Chitrasena ) was in the Mandaraachala mountain, and took her there. On the way, Sage Narada came and broke the secret about Naadijanga. Indra was about to kill her, but Sage Trinabindu’s cottage was nearby and he forbade Indra to kill the lady around his cottage. Indra refused to obey and Sage Trinabindu cursed that he turn into a woman.

Thus Indra the King of the Gods was turned into a woman. The Gods and Indra’s wife Sachi, went to Brahma for refuge. Lord Brahma said that Indra had committed heinous crimes, first by abducting Chitrasena and then murdering Naadijanga.

So Indra’s wife Sachi located Chitrasena and handed her over to Kubera and promised that she and Indra will worship the Demi Gods and Monsters on the fourteenth day of the full moon. Brahma told Sachi that the only way her husband Indra can regain his male form is by chanting the eight letter mantra of Narayana 2 lakh times. ( 200,000 times ). Indra did this chanting and regained his male form.

Svayambhuva Manu’s wife was Shatarupaa. They had two sons, namely Priyavrata and Uttanapaadaa. Uttanapaada had two wives, namely Suruchi, the queen and Suneeti, an ordinary woman. From the womb of Suruchi, the elder wife was born Uttamaa. From the womb of Suruchi, the other wife, was born Dhruva.

The King always treated Uttamaa better than Dhruva. The young Dhruva told this to his mother and wanted to rise to great heights, better than what the King could provide. Hence he went to the forest to pray to Lord Vishnu. He sought the guidance of the Great Rishis such as Marichi, Atri, angira, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasishta for his penance. Eventually, Lord Vishnu bestows upon Dhruva the position of the Pole Star which in effect controls the entire solar system !

Ch 33: Story of King Jayadhvajaa: 14 MB – 85 Verses – 12 mins 39 sec

King Sahasranika asks the question about the merits of cleaning and sweeping temples, offering Abhishekams, etc.

Sage Markandeya explains with a story. Once Yudhistira along with wife Draupadi and a team go on a trek to visit holy places. They come across a monster Bahuroma disguised as a saint, whose intention was to abduct Draupadi.  To help him, another monster named Sthulashira appeared, claiming he was looted by thieves.

The team decides to leave Draupadi in the “safeguard” of Bahuroma and go with Sthulashira in search of the thieves. They found none. Sensing foul play, they destroy Sthulashira and come back to only to find both Draupadi and Bahuroma missing. They go hunting for them and finally find them. Bahuroma drops Draupadi and runs. Chasing Bahuroma, they find he falls to the ground and suddenly appears as a four armed God.

Arjuna was surprised and asked Bahuroma the details. Bahuroma said that in a previous birth, he was King Jayadhvaja who cleaned temples. When the priests of the temples inquired the King, Jayadvaja said in yet a previous birth, he was born as a Brahmin named Raivata, who abducted women and stole their belongings. At one point, he took some women to a temple in ruins and proceeded to clean the temple and light a lamp first before having an affair.

Some guards thought he was a spy and killed him. Since he cleaned the temple, he ended up in Vishnu Loka. When Sage Narada came to Vishnu Loka, he (Raivata) did not salute him and so Narada cursed he would become a monster and when he will try to abduct Draupadi, Yudhistira would come and at the sight of him, he would regain his Godly form and return to Vishnu Loka.

That is the power of cleaning a temple !

The demon Hiranyaakshaa was the son of Diti. Living in the nether world, he constantly disturbed Gods and people that performed Yagnas on earth. The earth lost its holding power and got submerged in the water. Lord Vishnu took the avataram of a giant boar, killed Hiranyaakshaa  and lifted the earth and put back in place, so life can continue in peace.

Hiranyakashipu, the second son of Diti, performed severe penance and Brahma appears ready to offer boons. Hiranyakashipu asks that his death not occur inside a house or outside, not by day or by night, not by animals nor by Gods and so on. He does get these boons.

Immediately, he told his subjects that he was the king of the three worlds and that all worship should only be directed to him. The Gods were in despair and go to Brhaspati, their teacher, who tells them to worship Lord Vishnu.

The Gods lead by Lord Shiva go to Vishnu. Shiva recites a phenomenal hymn of 100 names. Lord Vishnu tells them that the end of the demon is near.

Ch 41: Story of the Birth of Prahlada: 9 MB – 64 Verses – 9 mins 18 sec

After receiving boons from Brahma, while Hiranyakashipu was getting caulky, something bothered him: there were earthquakes and bad omens. So he decided to go back to the forest and do more penance. This decision was concerning to Brahma who wanted to stop that penance. Sage Narada told him he would take care of it.

Sage Narada and another hermit Sage Parvata took the form of two birds reciting the name of Narayana; this aggravated the demon who went home to tell his wife about the events. That night, a baby was conceived; because of the chanting of the birds, the baby named Prahlada was born who became an ardent Vishnu devotee.

Prahlada kept preaching the greatness of Lord Vishnu and this aggravated his father quite a bit.

Hiranyakashipu tormented his son Prahlada by various horrible means, but none of them had an effect on the staunch devotion of Prahlada to Lord Vishnu.

Ch 43: The Tormenting of Prahlada Continues: 15.1 MB – 89 Verses – 13 mins 27 sec

Prahlada continues to preach to his fellow disciples about Lord Vishnu. When asked where he learnt all that, he said when his father went to the forest to perform penance for a second time and his mother was carrying him in her womb, Indra approached her with improper desires and Sage Narada drove him away saying she was pregnant with a powerful Vishnu devotee. And Narada was educating her on spiritual matters that got transmitted to him.

Eventually, Prahlada gets thrown into the sea tied with snakes. There he got a vision of Lord Vishnu, who told him He would appear in the form of a ferocious Lord Narasimha and his father would get destroyed shortly.

When Prahlada returned unscathed from the sea, Hiranyakashipu took out his sword called Chandrahasa and said “if your Lord Vishnu can appear from this pillar, then I accept you, but if He doesn’t, this sword of mine will cut you to two pieces.”

Just then Lord Narasimha came thrashing out of the pillar. ( The description of Lord Narasimha is quite powerful in the recitation ! ) The king’s soldiers and assistants were all slaughtered and Lord Narasimha teared off Hiranyakashipu to pieces ! Prahlada was enthroned.

Verses 40 to 42 describe the merits to one who listens to this magnificent episode of Lord Narasimha !

King Kartavirya with his army of soldiers once took shelter at Rishi Jamadagni’s place. The Rishi instantly transformed his hut into a huge palace and provided super food to the guests. When ready to leave, the palaces disappeared and it was back to the hut. Puzzled, the king asked how this happened. The Rishi said it was the work of the Divine cow Kamadhenu. The king wanted to take the cow to his palace. The Rishi and his wife forbade him, but his minister, a Brahmin killer, tried to take the cow forcibly, at which point, the cow disappeared into the sky.

Parasurama, who was Jamadagni’s son returned home and found his mother weeping. He knew by Divine vision what happened. Rishi Jamadagni was then killed by Kartavirya’s clan. He then took his plough, slaughtered Kartavirya and then proceeded to Brahmin hating Kshatriya kings twenty one times.

Narasimha Puranam Full Audio – 1 of 3

  

After the recitation and recording of the entire Kalika Puranam and Vishnu Puranam in this blog, there developed an intense desire to recite and record the entire Narasimha Puranam and make it available to all devotees so the feeling of being an audience to the Rishi Himself is obtained. By the Divine Will of Sri Lord Narasimha and All the Elevated Souls, here is the Original Entire Narasimha Puranam recited in beautiful Sanskrit for the common good of all. This set of 3 posts represents a major entry in this blog. This effort has taken a long time to complete.

 

This entry is especially useful if one wants to undertake a “Shravana Vratam” ( loosely defined as an “auspicious austere offering of devotion by listening” ) to Lord Narasimha by listening to the entire Puranam. Or one could listen to individual chapters here and there depending upon one’s inclination. As in other audio in this blog site, this is a humble offering by Adiyen- the humble servant here  – the audio is not professionally recorded. In fact, it has been recorded in a factory environment; as such due to interruptions, the recitation pitch may vary and there may be background noise. 

 

The Narasimha Avataram is the shortest of all avatarams of Maha Vishnu. Unlike Rama Avataram or Krishna Avataram, the MAIN focus here is the Destruction of the Asura Hiranyakashipu for the protection of Prahlada, the Great Devotee. As such, Lord Narasimha represents INTENSE energy, INTENSE emotional state and Absolute Protection At All Costs. That being said, one needs to have a highly respectful posture during the worship of Lord Narasimha. There have been amazing things experienced by people, one of which is described in the write-up here.

 

And now the details. 

Compared with others, this is a relatively shorter Puranam. This presentation comprises of 3,476 verses covering 68 chapters. Because of the sheer volume, there are a total of 3 parts here. The total hours of audio ends up being 9 hours, 22 minutes and 27 seconds. 

If one is simply listening for heavenly pleasure or for individual meritorious chapters, then individual chapters may be listened to. However, if a “vratam” is undertaken ( either with a formal “sankalpam”(vow) or simply a mental desire ) , then one needs to plan ahead. The vratam can be planned to be completed in 68 days at the rate of one chapter a day or in 34 days at the rate of 2 chapters a day or in 4 weekends at the rate of 17 chapters every weekend or any other time combination period. 

Extended periods are not preferred because so many worldly hurdles may crop up thereby introducing anxiety. It is advisable to peruse through FIRST by way of timing of each section, listen to one or two chapters and plan well in advance and of course pray for the success of the mission.

As in other Puranams in this blog, the number of shlokams and the audio time of each chapter is given individually. A very brief description of each chapter is also given, so one has some idea of what is being listened to. While listening, because of the tremendous level of peace that ensues, the body may tend to get so relaxed that one might fall asleep; to avoid this, please ensure plenty of sleep is given to the body ahead of time. To get the most benefit, try to pay attention to the words even if not fully understood. Understanding is great but not necessary; devotion is more important.

 

One MUST sit and listen; per Srimad Devi Bhagawatham, one cannot lie down and listen, unless you are sick and / or handicapped. One needs to shower clean, ( if showering cannot be done because of sickness, apply Thiru Namam, Vibhuti or Kumkumam ), wear clean clothes and light a lamp and offer something to Lord Narasimha every day that the vratam is followed; it could be some formal food, fruits, raisins, milk or at least some sugar. 

If you are listening in the car, then a chapter CANNOT be stopped without completing completely, even if your “destination” has been reached. Please offer the HIGHEST level of Respect and Devotion that is possible. This is a POWERFUL treatise, full of POTENT mantras and should NOT be taken lightly.

Because Lord Narasimha is of Extreme High Energy, women who choose to undertake the vratam should NOT continue during days of “cycles”; they are hereby advised to pause during such times or try to schedule ahead of time to avoid such periods completely.

From seconds ( Nimesha ) to yugas, Suta explains time measures. Seventy One sets of four yugas form a Manvantara. ( Incidentally, the current is the Vaivaswata Manvantara ).  One thousand sets of four yugas form a day of Brahma.

Ch 5: Secondary Creation Continued: 12.3 MB – 67 Verses – 10 mins 28 sec

Rudra split Himself into a male part and a female part and Vinayaka and Skanda were created. Manu Svayambhuva had Satarupa as His wife and gave rise to sons Priyavrata and Uttanapada and a daughter Prasuti who was married off to Daksha Prajapati. Daksha and Prasuti produced 24 daughters whose names were: Sradhdha, Lakshmi, Dhrti, Tushti, Pushti, Medha, Kriya, Budhdhi, Lajja, Vapu, Shanthi, Sidhdhi, Keerthi, Sambhuthi, Anusuya, Smrti, Preethi, Kshama, Sannathi, Satya, Turya, Khyaathi, Svaahaa and Svadhaa.

These daughters were married off to various Rishis; of great importance is Sambhuthi married to Marichi who produced Kashyapa and Smrti married to Angiraa who produced 4 daughters, namely Sinivali, Kuhu, Raka and Anumati. The daughter Anusuya married to Sage Atri gave birth to Soma, Durvasa and Dattatreya.

Daksha Prajapati had produced sixty daughters of which twenty seven were given to Chandra ( Moon ) and the rest to various sages.

Of special importance are the names of Daksha’s daughters who became wives of Sage Kashyapa: Aditi, Diti, Danu, Arista, Surasaa, Svasaa, Surabhi, Vinataa, Kadru, Taamraa, Krodhavasa, Ira and Muni. Aditi is considered the Mother of the Gods and Diti the mother of demons.

Aditi and Kashyapa produced Bharga, Amsu, Aruaman, Mitra, Varuna, Savita, Dhaataa, Vivasvaan, Tvashta, Pusha, Indra and Vishnu. Diti produced the two demons Hiranyaakshaa and Hiranyakashipu, the first one killed by Lord Varaahaa and the second by Lord Narasimha.

Ch 6: Birth of Sage Agastya and Sage Vasishta: 8.7 MB – 45 Verses – 7 mins 40 sec

Detailed account of the birth of Sage Agastya and Sage Vasistha from the heavenly Apsara Urvashi and Mitra and Varuna is illustrated.

This is a meritorious chapter. Verses 41 to 45 state that one who is desirous of children should read or listen to this episode for attaining projeny. Devas and ancestors get pleased by this account.

Sage Markandeya was the grandson of Bhrugu and Khyaathi. His parents were Mrkandu and Sumitra. He was told by an astrologer that he will die at the age of twelve. Sage Markandeya performs penance and conquers death.

Ch 10: Sage Markandeya’s penance: 9.6 MB – 52 Verses – 9 mins 38 sec

After conquering death, Sage Markandeya wished to see Lord Vishnu personally and started severe penance. An unbodily voice asked Him to bathe in all the holy places. That being a difficult task, the heavenly voice offers a hymn to be recited that would give the same merits as bathing in all the holy places. ( The listener may want to pay attention to this hymn that starts with “Jaya jaya Deva Deva”, so as to get the merits ). Sage Markandeya subsequently perceives Lord Vishnu.

Aditi’s son Vivasvaan had two children: son Yama and daughter Yami. Conversation between the two children is presented here. Verse 38 states one who listens or reads this chapter is said to satisfy ancestors.

Ch 13: Story of Devasharma and the Power of a Chaste Woman: 11.3 MB – 63 Verses – 10 mins 29 sec

Kashyapa, a Brahmin lived with Savitri, his wife in Nandigrama. Far away in Kosala, another Brahmin Yagnasharma lived with his wife Rohini, who had a son named Devasharma. All were religious. Yagnasharma passed away leaving behind wailing Rohini. The son Devasharma decided to leave his mother and go to perform penance in Nandigrama.

Once, some crows took away his clothes; in anger, he stared at them; they got burnt and dropped his clothes back. Later, he went begging for food at Rohini’s house. She fed him after a long time. When asked about the delay, Rohini said: “ I am not a crow. Service to my husband comes first. You should be taking care of your ailing mother first, before doing penance. Shirking away from duty is sinful.” Devasharma learnt of the tremendous powers Rohini had gathered simply by serving her husband.

He returned to Kosala, took care of his mother, got married and after the passing away of his mother and wife, returned to do severe penance and reached the abode of Lord Narasimha.

Ch 14: Observing one’s ashrama: 4.3 MB – 16 Verses – 3 mins 21 sec

Lord Narasimha comes in the dream of a Brahmin householder and advises him to strictly follow the rules of one’s own ashramam.  A householder should maintain the duties of the same and a Sanyasi should maintain the duties of that ashramam. The Brahmin follows the advice and eventually reaches the abode of of Lord Narasimha.

Sage Shukha asks Sage Vyasa as to how to attain Mukti quickly, being trapped in the world tree with all its attachments. Sage Vyasa then explains what Lord Shiva said to Sage Narada, when the latter asked the same question. In summary, devotion to Lord Vishnu leads one away from desires and attachments and provides Mukti naturally.

Ch 18: Story of the Birth of Ashvini Kumaras: 6.1 MB – 25 Verses – 5 mins 25 sec

This chapter is in prose form.

Aditya (Sun) was married to Sangya. They produced Manu, Yama and Yami. Sangya was unable to bear the scorching heat of Aditya. Sangya then made a shadow of herself called Chaayaa and moved back to her parents’ home and turned herself into a mare to remain incognito. Aditya and Chaayaa produced son Shani and daughter Tapati.

When Aditya went to the region of the parents’ house of Sangya, He found her there disguised as a mare. Aditya turned into a horse and the two produced the twin Ashvini Kumaras. Brahma declared that the Ashvini Kumaras, who became Divine physicians have a right to the offerings in the Yagnas.

After that Sangya regained Her original form; Divine Architect Vishwakarma reduced the intense heat of Aditya, and so Aditya and Sangya could stay happily ever after.

Verse 25 states that one who listens to this story will develop a resplendent body on earth and enjoy heaven after passing.

Once Diti, the wife of Kashyapa, wanted to have a son as powerful as Indra. Kashayapa agreed to it but said to her to ensure she followed all the rules of pregnancy. However, one evening, Diti forgot to clean her feet after dinner. Seizing the opportunity, Indra entered the womb of Diti and cut the fetus into 7 parts first and then again cut each of the cut pieces into 7 parts. Thus the 49 Maruts, Who are the Storm Gods came into being.

This chapter lists the 14 Manvantaras which are: Svayambhuva, Svarochisa, Uttama, Taamasaa, Raivataa, Chakshushaa, Vaivasvatha ( current ), Saavarnaa, Daksha Saavarni, Brahma Saavarni, Dharma Saavarni, Rudra Saavarni, Ruci and finally Bhaumaa. The kings, Gods and Saptarishis of each period are listed. The completion of 14 Manvantaras results in 1,000 sets of 4 Yugas. That completes 1 day of Brahma. A similar period of 1 night of Brahma follows !
