At the request of Minal Mehta, a visitor to this blog, here
is the audio of Sri Narmada Sahasranama Stotram. One cannot simply perceive Narmada
as a body of water and nothing else; that is akin to perceiving ourselves as a conglomerate
of body parts. She IS a vibrant, active Goddess and can be invoked wherever one
resides. The same applies to all the sacred rivers and mountains. A river or mountain
becomes sacred by the performance of penance there by sages and rishis. And Sri
Adi Shankara Himself has meditated on the banks of the Narmada.
There’s a detailed story in Vishnu Puranam, involving a battle
between Naagaas and Daanavaas wherein Sri Narmada Devi comes to the rescue of
the Naagaas. The story ends with the statement that one who recites every day the
couplet “Narmadaayai Nama Praathar Narmadaayai Namo Nishi: Namosthu Narmade
Thubhyam Thraahi Maam Visha Sarpathaha”, will not be subject to poison from
snakes OR poison from foods; and one needs no reminder of the unhealthy ingredients in the foods we consume nowadays. By the way, this couplet is part of everyday
SandhyaaVandanam.
There’s a video somewhere in YouTube, wherein the guruji
states that while one needs to take a bath in Ganga to get sins washed away, one
needs only to see Narmada for the same. Adiyen, the humble servant here, has not
been blessed with the opportunity to have Darshan of Sri Narmada. If you live
in India, it is humbly suggested to consider this.
The Narmada Sahasranama Stotram presented here is somewhat difficult
to pronounce in comparison to others; this is being stated so one is mentally prepared
to be patient and slows down speed. The lyrics used is given in the link at the
end, but as of this writing, there have been many typesetting errors there. The audio
has corrected many of them. Audio quality though is NOT the greatest; hope it is excused. This is a long hymn. May Sri Narmada Devi bless us all !
And now the audio. 36 minutes 19 seconds long.
